Why Veterans and Military Families Choose the University of Montana

Transitioning from military service to civilian life can be challenging, and finding the right place to continue education plays a pivotal role in that process. For many veterans, the University of Montana (UM) stands out as a top choice as a No. 1-ranked Military Friendly School

A supportive environment, diverse programs and the staff at UM’s Military Veteran Services Office (MVSO) add to the University’s top-ranked status. But it’s also an overall commitment to serving those who served us and helping veterans and their families succeed.

Scroll below to discover more reasons the University of Montana is ranked as one of the nation’s most military-friendly schools:

1. Military and Veteran-Friendly Campus and Resources

UM’s military veteran-friendly culture is one of the biggest magnets attracting veterans to our campus. UM’s President, Seth Bodnar, is a former Army Special Forces Officer and a member of the Montana Army National Guard. His leadership is integral in creating a culture that supports and empowers servicemembers and their families.

UM has a dedicated Military and Veterans Center with a Military and Veteran Services Office, providing a range of resources to help veterans transition to university life. Whether it’s assisting with GI Bill® benefits, advising on academic paths, or providing guidance on navigating the campus, the office offers personalized support to students.

The center also offers a comfortable space where students can relax, study, and connect with one another. This space fosters a sense of community among student veterans, ensuring that they feel supported both academically and socially.

2. Career-Focused Academic Programs and Flexibility

The University of Montana offers a wide range of academic programs, no matter where you’re at in your academic journey. This includes first-time undergraduate students, graduate students and students transferring credits from other colleges or universities. Degrees range from the arts, sciences, business and healthcare (and many more specialized areas of interest).

UM also offers flexible learning options such as evening classes, online programs, and part-time study. Additionally, many UM programs have strong ties to local industries, giving students the opportunity to engage in internships, co-ops, and other hands-on learning experiences.

3. Easy to Use Military Education Benefits

The University of Montana is a recognized participant for all VA and DoD education benefits. With full-time staff dedicated to understanding military and veteran education benefits, UM is able to help remove barriers and improve the student experience.

The Military and Veterans Center also employs part-time student veteran employees, providing peer-to-peer assistance. Several military-affiliated staff are also across campus, personalizing the student experience.

4. A Supportive Community and Networking Opportunities

UM’s commitment to veterans extends beyond academics and financial support. The university is home to an active Student Veterans Association (SVA) chapter, UM’s Student Veteran Organization, providing a strong support network for student veterans.

The SVA offers opportunities for veterans to connect, share experiences, and provide mutual support as they navigate the challenges of university life. The SVA is also partnered with several organizations, including Project Healing Waters, which connects veterans through flyfishing, and XSports4vets, connecting veterans through outdoor recreation.

This sense of community is crucial for veterans, who may face unique challenges when transitioning from military life to academic life and then to a civilian career. Montana is considered #3 for the highest percentage of veteran residents in the nation. Being surrounded by fellow veterans who understand those challenges can make a world of difference.

5. A Beautiful and Peaceful Campus

The University of Montana is located in Missoula, a vibrant, scenic city nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. For many veterans and their families, the natural beauty of the area is a significant draw. Missoula offers a peaceful, outdoor-oriented lifestyle, with plenty of opportunities for hiking, fishing, and exploring the surrounding wilderness.

The calm and relaxed atmosphere of Missoula can be a refreshing change for veterans who have spent time in high-stress environments. The outdoor activities in the area also provide great ways to de-stress and maintain a healthy lifestyle. UM and the town of Missoula are ripe with activity, but small enough to quickly find a quiet place to relax.

6. Career Support and Job Placement Assistance

The University of Montana provides robust career services to help veterans transition from academics to the workforce. The Career Services Center offers workshops, resume reviews, and job fairs specifically tailored to veterans. UM also partners with local employers and organizations, ensuring that graduates develop future employment opportunities.

7. A Sense of Purpose and Opportunity

Attending the University of Montana provides veterans and their families with the opportunity to further their education while honoring their service to the country. Many veterans choose UM because they feel that it offers the perfect balance of academic excellence, community support, and a peaceful environment.

At UM, veterans are more than just students; they are valued members of the campus community. The university understands the unique strengths and challenges that veterans bring to the table and provides an environment that allows them to thrive academically, socially, and professionally.
