Your Guide to UM Residence Halls

Two students moving into their residence hall

Residence Halls. A quintessential college experience. UM has nine residence halls, all sharing similar amenities but all with a different vibe. You have your choice of residence halls when applying, although applying as early as possible is essential for the best chance to get your first pick. Housing applications typically open for the following academic year in the first half of October.

You’ll fill out your housing application in the housing portal. Below is information on each of the 9 residence halls at UM and the various perks of living in each of them. For more detailed information on each residence hall, plus other information like off-campus housing, check out the UM Housing main webpage

In reverse alphabetical order, here are the nine residence halls:

Turner Residence Hall

Turner Hall is an all-female-identifying residence hall and is three stories tall. It has rooms on the basement floor, the 2nd floor, and the 3rd floor. Most rooms are doubles, but a select few are singles, and every room has a sink. Turner is right on the Oval and in the center of campus, allowing quick walk times to classes and The Lodge.

On the 3rd floor, there is a complimentary tea station with teas and things such as quick oatmeal for residents. The main housing office is located in Turner Hall. There is also the Dell Brown Room, which is a perfect space for larger gatherings with a podium, large projecting screen and piano.

Pantzer Residence Hall

Pantzer Hall is located on the southwest side of campus and has four floors of rooms. It is accessible to all students, with rooms on the first floor and an elevator. Pantzer also has storage units available in the basement for residents to store various items during the school year or over the summer.

Pantzer is the only residence hall with a suite-style layout. Each dorm has 4 separate bedrooms, a common space, 2 bathrooms, and a small kitchen area with a fridge and microwave. Each room houses one student and allows for privacy for each student. The bathrooms are also cleaned weekly by custodial staff.

Pro-Tip: Two floors in Pantzer Hall are reserved for upper-class students only.

Miller Residence Hall

Miller Residence Hall

Miller Hall is on the south side of campus and offers housing options of doubles, three-person pods, and penthouse singles on the 5th floor. Miller’s floors are divided into two wings, one male and one female, and there is also a gender-inclusive community floor. The three-person pods have three separate rooms and a shared common space.

Miller also houses the Global Living Learning Community in addition to the Gender Inclusive Community. The large lobby area has cozy seating, a piano, and an overall comfortable atmosphere. Gatherings often take place in the lobby area, including the downstairs lounge with a TV for screening events.

Knowles Residence Hall

Knowles Residence Hall

Knowles Hall is adjacent to Turner Hall and has four floors. The hallways in Knowles are divided into male, female, or co-ed housing. Knowles has a smaller resident population, which creates a comfortable environment. There are gender-neutral bathrooms in the co-ed wings with individual shower and toilet rooms.

With an elevator and dorm options on the first floor, Knowles is accessible to students with disabilities. There is a large kitchen and lounge area on the first floor, where students can cook or bake together and study in comfortable seating. A TV and ping-pong table are also in the basement lounge area.

Jesse Residence Hall

Jesse Hall is on the far west side of campus. It is 11 stories tall and has three elevators. The floors alternate between male and female housing. A large lounge on the 11th floor has a community kitchen for residents. Each floor has a study lounge, with a TV lounge on the first floor.

Because of its height, Jesse offers unique and stunning views of Missoula just outside a resident’s dorm room window. There is also a Mountain Line bus stop just next to Jesse Hall, which provides students with quick access to the public transportation system.

Elrod Residence Hall

Inside of Elrod Residence Hall

Elrod Hall has many single dorm rooms, each equipped with a sink. The north wall of Elrod is almost entirely made of windows, which create a light and airy atmosphere indoors no matter what time of year. There is a large lounge in the lobby and a TV lounge in the basement.

Since Elrod is one of the older residence halls, it has a classic feel. There is also a large courtyard outside between Craig Hall and Duniway Hall for students to enjoy when the weather is nice. The lobby offers fun games, such as ping-pong, pool, or chess.

Duniway Residence Hall

Duniway Residence Hall

Duniway has four floors total, two for male students and two for female students. Since Duniway and Elrod are connected, they share many facilities, including Elrod’s student lounges and main lobby area. Duniway offers traditional double rooms for students, adding to the classic dorm room experience.

Craig Residence Hall

Craig Hall is also connected to Duniway and Elrod. Therefore, it provides the opportunity to meet many other students while living there. Craig is four stories tall, with the top 2 floors being for female residents and the bottom 2 for male residents. There are double rooms, triple rooms, and single rooms available.

Craig has two laundry rooms, one on the north ground floor and the other on the south ground floor. A study lounge with a piano is near the main lobby, a TV lounge is in the basement, and two large study rooms are on floors 2 and 3.

Aber Residence Hall

Aber Hall is 11 stories tall, but the first six floors are reserved for student support services such as financial aid. Floors 7-11 house the student residents. Each floor has a study room, with a larger TV lounge on the first floor. Aber is also accessible for students with disabilities because of the three elevators in the building.
