Spring 2010 Priority Advising is underway in Undergraduate Advising Center

Priority advising and spring 2010 course selection assistance are underway in the Undergraduate Advising Center (for Undeclared, Pre-Communication Studies, Pre-Psychology and freshmen Business Administration majors). Although academic advising is an ongoing venture of the UAC, this is the beginning of four weeks of priority advising and registration for spring 2010. Many departments don’t start spring 2010 advising until October 19, so check with your advisor for details.

New Course Numbering System starting Fall 2009

An important announcement to all students: beginning autumn 2009 semester, eighteen academic departments will offer their courses under a new course numbering system. The subject abbreviations are new, the number designations are new, and in some cases even the title of the course has changed. Important Dates and Deadlines

This section provides important dates and deadlines for all students.

October 26 – Registration begins for Spring 2010 for all other UM Students. Spring 2010 priority registration runs according to an alphabetical schedule from October 26 through November 6.

November 2 – Last day to use drop/add form to change autumn 2009 registration. A $10 charge is assessed per drop and per add. Grades appear on transcripts as W. Grades do not impact GPA.

November 3 – Petition form required to change autumn 2009 registration. Change to students’ registration requires Petition to Change Registration form, with Dean’s signature required. A $10 charge is assessed per drop and per add. Grades appear on transcripts as WP, withdraw passing, or WF, withdraw failing. Grades do not impact GPA.

November 6 – Third deferred payment for autumn 2009 due.

November 11 – Veteran’s Day holiday. No classes held. UM offices are closed.

November 25 – Thanksgiving Vacation begins: Travel day for students. No classes held, but UM offices are open for business.

November 26-27 – Thanksgiving holiday. No classes held. UM offices are closed.

November 30 – Spring 2010 registration bills available on Cyberbear.

December 4 – Last day to withdraw from all courses for autumn 2009. See the Registration Counter in Griz Central.

December 11 – Last day to petition to change autumn 2009 course registration.

December 11 – Last day of classes for autumn 2009.

December 12-13 – Study Days.

December 14-18 – Final examinations for autumn 2009.

December 25 – Christmas holiday. UM offices are closed.

They have info on policies, deadlines, general education requirements and much more. If they don’t know the answer, they will refer you to the appropriate person.

Tutoring Services

Throughout spring semester, Study Jam will be available at the UC Commons. On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30, the UC Commons will be open with study group tables staffed by professional tutors in various subject areas, including Statistics (Math 241), Spanish (101, 102, 201, 202), Chemistry (151, 152, 161, 162), Biology (100, 108), Economics (111 and 112) and Physics (121, 122). Individual students and study groups can gather and obtain help as needed. Click here for the schedule breakdown of study tables by subject and time. The Writing Center

To help students as they work on any writing assignment and at all stages of their writing processes, The Writing Center offers free one-to-one writing tutoring. Open most days 9:30 AM – 9:00 PM, The Writing Center provides by-appointment tutoring in LA 144 and in the Mansfield Library. To make an appointment, go to www.umt.edu/writingcenter .

Students may also drop in for free writing tutoring at STUDY JAM in the UC Commons. The Writing Table at STUDY JAM is available Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays 6:30-9:00pm. No appointment necessary!

The Writing Center welcomes all students from any discipline.

Math Pilot

Math PILOT is a joint venture of the Office of the Provost, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Its goal is to improve student performance in 100-level mathematics at The University. Math PiLOT offers day and night drop-in tutoring, placement testing, and individual counseling for the struggling math student. For College of Technology students, a range of tutoring services (for several UM programs and departments) are also offered at the Academic Support Center (Room AD-06) on the COT East Campus (909 South Ave W.). Contact Cec Gallagher (243-7878) or Donna Bakke (243-7826) for more information.

Career Services

Career Services located in LC 154 gives students (freshman – senior) a leg up in the fast track professional world. Students can prepare for post-graduation by utilizing Career Services to help build a resume with summer jobs and volunteer work while exploring career opportunities. They even house a library of information on potential careers and best fit university majors. Career Services has a program called Ask-an-Alum, which provides students the opportunity to contact former UM students to ask questions about their career choices.

TRIO-SSS

The TRIO-Student Support Services program is located in Lommasson Center (LC) 154. TRIO provides eligible students with a variety of resources, such as a 2-credit course in study skills (C&I 160), academic advising, help with financial aid issues, and tutoring opportunities. TRIO eligibility is based on income (similar to Pell Grant eligibility guidelines), parent’s education (neither parent completed 4-year college degree), and/or documented student disability.

Disability Services for Students (DSS)

DSS is also located in LC 154. It offers academic advising, classroom accommodations, and testing accommodations (extended time, alternate test formats, and private testing environments). If a student is registered with DSS, they are eligible for TRIO services.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)

CAPS is located in the West Entrance of the Curry Health Center. Full time students receive three free visits and can use services such as:

· Individual Counseling and Psychotherapy
· Topical Group Therapy / Workshops
· Crisis Walk-in Service
· Test Anxiety Workshops (call 243-4711 for dates and times)
· Psychiatric Consultation
· After hours urgent care (provided by the CHC Medical Clinic Staff)
· Brief In-patient Respite Care
· Bereavement counseling
· Networked with Self Over Substances to provide substance abuse counseling

Group counseling on pre-determined topics is also available for free. Topics are listed on the CAPS website.
