We have an update on the Banner transition from the JInitiator to the Java Plug-in. As we began our transition process last Monday, we made available Java Plug-in 1.6.0.13 – the most current version at that time. Many of you noticed that last Wednesday Sun released a newer version of the Java Plug-in (1.6.0.14). Many computers are set-up to prompt the user when software downloads are available. If users have administrative privileges on their computers, they are being prompted to download the new version – and so some users have downloaded it.
Good news! Oracle and Sun are coordinating testing prior to releasing Java Plug-in releases, so that upgrades are essentially pre-certified. What this means is that Banner supports Java Plug-in upgrades as soon as they are released by Sun – i.e. as long as we use the Java Plug-in 1.6.x series, Banner will be supported.
If you upgraded to Java Plug-in 1.6.0.14, you are fine and there is no need to downgrade to 1.6.0.13; OR, if you installed Java Plug-in 1.6.0.13 on your computer, there is no need to upgrade because Banner will work with both versions of the software. Note: Upgrading to the newer version won’t impact Banner functionality. Banner should function the same with either version of the Java Plug-in.
We will leave Java Plug-in 1.6.0.13 as the version to download from the Banner Support site. Let us know if you have any questions (kathy.garramone@umontana.edu; diane.norem@umontana.edu).
