UM network outage: 6/25, 5:20 a.m.

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

On Thursday June 25, 2009 beginning at 5:20 a.m., we will be replacing a key router that connects the University of Montana network to the outside world.  This will affect all University of Montana locations (including all dorms, Montana Tech, UM-Western, Helena COT, all Missoula locations, etc.).  There will be no access to or from the Internet, to or from the Internet2, to or from the Montana State Government, or any entity not located at UM during the router replacement.

This will not affect communication between or within different UM locations with the exception of Lubrecht Forest and the Montana Tech people located in Billings.   Those 2 locations will lose all their network connectivity during this time.  External VPN connections will also be broken during this time. On campus Banner access (which includes CyberBear) will not be affected.

We expect the router replacement to take no longer than 40 minutes, with main communications reestablished  after about 15 minutes.

This change is necessary to prepare the University Network for new higher capacity connections which should be available later this year.

Thank you, in advance, for your cooperation.

Java Plug-in transition – UPDATE

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

We have an update on the Banner transition from the JInitiator to the Java Plug-in. As we began our transition process last Monday, we made available Java Plug-in 1.6.0.13 –  the most current version at that time. Many of you noticed that last Wednesday Sun released a newer version of the Java Plug-in (1.6.0.14). Many computers are set-up to prompt the user when software downloads are available.  If users have administrative privileges on their computers, they are being prompted to download the new version – and so some users have downloaded it.

Good news! Oracle and Sun are coordinating testing prior to releasing Java Plug-in releases, so that upgrades are essentially pre-certified. What this means is that Banner supports Java Plug-in upgrades as soon as they are released by Sun – i.e. as long as we use the Java Plug-in 1.6.x series, Banner will be supported.

If you upgraded to Java Plug-in 1.6.0.14, you are fine and there is no need to downgrade to 1.6.0.13; OR, if you installed Java Plug-in 1.6.0.13 on your computer, there is no need to upgrade because Banner will work with both versions of the software. Note: Upgrading to the newer version won’t impact Banner functionality. Banner should function the same with either version of the Java Plug-in.

We will leave Java Plug-in 1.6.0.13 as the version to download from the Banner Support site Let us know if you have any questions (kathy.garramone@umontana.edu; diane.norem@umontana.edu).

New Java Plug-in for Banner (INB)

Friday, June 5th, 2009

To keep pace with Oracle and Banner software upgrades as well as other vendor software advances, IT is implementing a new Java Plug-in (JPI) for UM Banner (ADMN and HCADMN). Java is implemented as an Active X control and is necessary in order for Banner to run. The current plug-in, the Oracle JInitiator, is being replaced with Java Plug-in version 1.6.0.13, which is the most current version of Java’s plug-ins.

By noon on Thursday, June 25, all Banner users will need to have downloaded the new Java Plug-in before Banner will function for them.  Users most be logged in as a local administrator on their computer in order to install the plug-in.

Detailed information about this implementation is available on the Banner Support website.
