New virus attack: 1/27/09

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

There is a potential virus being sent via email from these sources: IKEA (free software), Coke (job offer), Hallmark (e-card). Please inform your constituents to not open them  or the accompanying zip file. We are currently investigating this virus and what it could potentially do.

If you or someone in your department has opened the zip file and have suffered consequences, please let IT Central know as soon as possible with as many details as you can (243-HELP). We will post additional information about this virus as it becomes available.

FYI: Campus infections

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

During the past few weeks we have been seeing a number of computer infections on campus and some of them have been shared via jump drives. We recommend you keep your computers patched and antivirus definitions up to date to help mitigate against these problems.  At this point, due to the transmission of the infections from jump drives, we also recommend you disable the autoplay feature.

Please let us know if you have experienced any infected computers – the symptoms, names, error messages, so we can help facilitate solutions to these problems.

Please contact IT Central, 243-HELP, if you have questions about this issue.

IT website redesign – now live

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

Information Technology recently redesigned its website. Links from referring sites may be out of date. If you attempt to access a page with an outdated link, you will be directed to an IT site index with the new links to locate the page you are looking for.

If you used a bookmark, or manage a website with a link to an IT web page, be sure to update it. Comments and questions may be directed to IT Central at 243-HELP, or email us at italk@umontana.edu.

NOTE: Some departments have links to the NetID web page. We have created a redirect for this particular page and will have it in place for some time. However, departments may want to update their links to the new NetID page as soon as possible.

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

During the week of January 5-9, maintenance is being performed on GrizMail email servers that will limit access to the service during evening hours.
Beginning at 4pm each day, GrizMail users will not be able to open their mailboxes or send messages for several hours while storage and performance issues are addressed. Email service should resume by about 9pm each day. Maintenance activities are expected to be completed by Friday, January 9th. Questions about this activity may be directed to IT Central, 243-4357.

Exchange service: UPDATE 1/5/09

Monday, January 5th, 2009

Compression of faculty and staff Exchange mailboxes – complete. As announced on December 18, due to decreasing storage space on the Exchange servers causing email service issues, IT Exchange administrators are compressing all the databases that reside on these servers. Compression of all faculty and staff mailboxes went well and is now complete, resulting in large amounts of available storage space. We appreciate your cooperation during this process.

Next up – Compression of student (GrizMail) Exchange mailboxes. IT administrators are now in the process of compressing all student databases that reside on the Exchange servers. The schedule remains the same:  it begins at 4pm each day (until early evening), until completed. During this time, students may experience the inability to open their mailboxes, send messages, and notice synchronization errors. These errors will clear up once all databases are fully compressed. Thank you.
