About 125 UM alumni and friends enjoyed food, baseball and a little bit of cloud cover last night at the UM Night at the Osprey. Temperatures were predicted to sizzle at game time, but a few light clouds passed over and combined with a light breeze to make a perfect evening for watching the Osprey beat the Billings Mustangs 6-4. The event was jointly sponsored by the UM Alumni Association and the UM Foundation. GSA also donated a couple of great gifts as giveaways. Monte showed up to throw out the first pitch and was a hit, as always, with the kids – and lots of older alums, too! Attendees enjoyed barbecue chicken and pork, salad, veggies and the always-delicious deep fried brownie bites! This annual event is always a lot of fun for everyone and we’ll look forward to seeing you there next year!

Helena Lecture

Richard Drake, Helena Lecture

Helena Lecture

More than 40 UM alumni and friends gathered at The University of Montana-Helena College of Technology last Wednesday to listen to an informative presentation by UM History Chairperson, Richard Drake, on Terrorism, Past and Present. This is the fifth UM faculty presentation in the Helena area – a tradition we hope to continue for years to come.

One alumna wrote our office to say that Dr. Drake’s lecture / Q&A session was “so fascinating that it seemed to last only 10 minutes.”  Indeed, at times his presentation seemed more like an engaging dialogue rather than a lecture.

The UM Office of Alumni Relations sends out a big thank you to Richard Drake for fitting us into his busy schedule and helping our office maintain ties to our former students.

Community Lecture Series

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Nearly 300 Missoula and University community members came together last night for the second installment of the 2009 Community Lecture Series, “Hidden Montana: Dispelling Myths.”  Dean Peggy Kuhr of UM’s School of Journalism discussed “Journalism’s Brave New World,” and deconstructed the myth that Journalism is a dying industry.  Dean Kuhr walked the audience through countless new electronic avenues for news media, and highlighted the effects of these changes in Montana.  A lively round of questions following the lecture proved that this was a timely and pertinent subject for our audience.

The Community Lecture Series continues next week with Rick Graetz’s presentation of “Discovering New Territory: The Simple Grandeur of Montana East of the Mountains.”

Charter Day 2009

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

On Thursday, February 12, The University of Montana celebrated its 116th birthday with Charter Day festivities.  The Office of Alumni Relations mingled with students in the UC atrium during the lunch hour, offering birthday cupcakes in honor of the day.  The talented UM Brazilian Percussion Ensemble entertained us with their lively beats and exciting rhythms.

Later in the evening, we convened in the UC ballroom for the annual Charter Day awards ceremony and reception.  This year we recognized an impressive roster of University and Missoula community members, including:

William E. Jones, Montana Alumni Award;

Jessie Davie, ASUM Student Service Award;

James and Joy Mariska, Neil S. Buckley Presidential Service Award;

Professor Jean Luckowski, Montana Faculty Service Award;

Professor Phil Condon, Robert T. Pantzer Presidential Humanitarian Award;

Regents Professor Jakki Mohr, George M. Dennison Presidential Faculty Award for Distinguished Accomplishment;

and our own Jodi Moreau, George M. Dennison Presidential Staff Award for Distinguished Accomplishment.

All in attendance enjoyed a brilliant performance by the UM Symphony Orchestra. Provost Engstrom presided over the ceremony, President Dennison provided the address and Missoula Mayor John Engen attended to proclaim February 12, 2009 as The University of Montana Day.  Afterwards, award recipients joined family, friends and colleagues for a festive reception and a rousing win for the Lady Griz basketball team (75-48 against Sacramento State) in the President’s Box at Dahlberg Arena.  It was truly a day to celebrate our University and honor those who have helped it to succeed for these one hundred and sixteen years!

Griz vs UNC

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

The Grizzlies traveled to a warm and sunny Greeley, CO, last weekend to take on the University of Northern Colorado Bears – I was fortunate enough to tag along to see to the tailgate. What a beautiful day it was. The UNC Alumni Association shared their tailgate experience with the ever-faithful Griz fans (some of whom traveled from Montana) in the parking lot next to the stadium. Jackson’s Bar and Grill fixed up a fabulous BBQ of brats and burgers and poured cold bevies for those interested in partaking, while energetic and toe-tapping music played in the background. We even had a couple of brave souls (Grizzly Athletics Marketing Director Christie Anderson and GSA Special Events Coordinator Brynn Malloy) stand up in front of the crowd and sing the Griz fight song.uncbaby.jpg

All were entertained by a very young Griz fan – Hannah Baskett, daughter of UM alum Rick Baskett ‘76 & J.D. ‘79 whose infectious smile was extremely contagious.

I’m sure that all who attended last weekend’s game, including Hannah, were thrilled with the 41-20 whooping the Griz handed the Bears. I know I was!

Thanks to the very nice folks from UNC’s Alumni Association, VP for Alumni and Donor Relations Jerry DeWitt and Associate Director Andrea Hawkins, for their gracious welcome and the hard work they put into helping make our tailgate a smash.

Griz vs Sac State

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

sacstate.jpg  What started out looking like a potentially frigid October afternoon took a much welcomed turn just in time for the football game.  Layers were shed,   eyes were shielded and Grizzly fanatics were granted one more amazing Saturday with our clapping hands unhindered by gloves. The mood was only lifted by what the Griz made to look like an easy victory over Sacramento State.  Final Score: Griz 43, Hornets 7!

Helena Recent Grad Social

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

The UM Alumni Association and UM Foundation took to the road last night for a Helena Recent Grad gathering.  All UM alums living in the Helena area who graduated in the last 10 years were invited, and we were pleased to see so many come out on a cold Tuesday night.  We congregated for happy hour in the Upper Tap Room at the beautifully remodeled Blackfoot River Brewing-complete with locally brewed ales and delicious hors d’ouvres.

Bob Gardipee ‘00 and Jolyn Eggart ‘99 joined Krista Frederikson of the UM Foundation and Kelsey Crawford of the UM Alumni Relations Office as the evening’s hosts.  A lively crowd mixed and mingled, reminiscing about their college years at UM and updating each other on their current personal and professional ventures.  We were delighted to hear that so many Helena alums remain enthusiastically involved in the UM community.

We have Griz Alum Brad Simshaw ‘80, ‘84, and the entire staff at Blackfoot River Brewing to thank for their generous hospitality and excellent service.  And most of all, thanks to all of the Helena area alums who joined us last night!  Cheers!

Being an Ambassador

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

kelsey-poore.jpgThis year’s Homecoming was especially memorable for me. As a senior at The University, this Homecoming was my last as a Grizzly student. It certainly won’t be my last overall. My dad brought me to my first Griz game at three months old in 1986 and I have been attending Homecoming since then. UM Homecoming continues to bring new experiences, as I’ve held differing roles throughout my college career. As a little girl, I can remember idolizing the cheerleaders and dreaming of my future. For the last two years, I fulfilled my dreams of becoming a Griz cheerleader. This year, I couldn’t be more honored to represent UM as an ambassador. I know what the little girls and boys envision as they see UM students in the Homecoming parade because I used to be that little kid with big dreams. I am utterly flattered to be a role model for those following in my footsteps. Homecoming at The University of Montana evokes just that–coming home. For alumni, students, and fans alike, Homecoming represents tradition. As we enter the bright future that this institution offers, we embark on new journeys, while celebrating what makes UM the quintessential example of higher education. I will forever remember the boom of the canon in celebration of a Grizzly touchdown and the smiles of children lining the streets of the Homecoming parade. Homecoming represents a time when dreams come true at The University of Montana.
