Griz Nation in South Texas!

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Texas.jpgYep, we are nearing that time again during the great Griz fall football season when our Grizzlies of the University of Montana take on the MSU bobcats in the annual “brawl of the wild”. This will be the 108th renewal of this Big Sky Classic.

The members of the Griz Nation in South and South Central Texas will join with our cross state MSU friends one more time to enjoy this storied rivalry again this year.
The UM Alumni Association is once again sponsoring and coordinating the National Satellite feed and we will be having it in Austin Texas again this year.We will be gathering on November 22, 2008 at 1:05 PM Central Standard Time for a great time rooting for our nationally ranked Griz. You will be seeing “old “friends, making new ones, enjoying an adult beverage or not, and having lunch in a really nice location if you like. You will also make some new friends with bobcat fans.

We urge you to keep November 22nd open for this great event that has seen increasing attendance until we had about 120 fans equally divided between The Griz Nation and the MSU fans in 2007.

The location is: the Cool River Café, 4001 W. Parmer (sic) Lane, Austin, TX. It is in the North Part of Austin an easy to locate. Their phone number is:  (512) 835-0010. They have a great website: http://www.coolrivercafe.com. This is a smoke free and child/grandchild friendly location.

The UM Alumni Association will be sending out a brochure advertising this fun event in the near future.

To contact the co hosts for more information, please call:
Anne Duffy (512) 736-4867 (Austin Area) or
Ken and Dianne Lawrence (210) 493-7936 (San Antonio and South)
Hope to see you in Austin for a great time and another Griz victory!!

Distinguished Alumni Awards

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

The University of Montana Alumni Association is composed of many highly successful, talented and amazing people specializing in a variety of fields. The association had the honor of hosting a gathering honoring three such alums at the annual Distinguished Alumni Awards ceremony. This year’s recipients were Jeff Hamilton, Judith Blakely Morgan and Garry South. Judith Blakely Morgan, a quietly elegant woman as well as speaker, had the second floor of the new journalism building in alternating states of edge-of-their-seat interest and slapping-their-knees laughter. She told stories of the real Dr. Seuss, Ted Geisel, and his many vodka-induced escapades. All of this year’s DAAs were interesting people, eloquent speakers, and a testament to the level of excellence honed here at The University of Montana.

Class of 1968 Reunion

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Class of 1968 LuncheonHomecoming week is as much a time for reconnecting as for football. The week marked the Class of 1968 Reunion, which kicked off with a luncheon in the University Center. After a scrumptious meal, many of the alums shared stories and memories from their time here at The University of Montana forty years ago. As a current student, it was great to hear some of the similarities and differences between their era and my own. Many would get a faraway look in their eyes as they recounted tales of singing for the choir, wreaking havoc in their “dormitories” and even marching for various political causes. It was really a privilege to listen in on what an impact UM has made in the lives of this great group of people.

Dorm/Department Decorating Contest

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

millerhall.jpgAs a 2002 graduate from the University of Montana and now working on campus for the Alumni Association, I have come to appreciate more the beauty and togetherness Homecoming brings to campus. I had the pleasure to be part of the judging team for the decorating contest that takes place every year during this fun filled week. Students, departments and individual employees really went all out this year. I couldn’t help but root for the darling girls in Miller Hall room #404. That was the exact dorm room I lived in my freshman year of college….those were the good old days!!

Volunteering at The University of Montana

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

clark_hamor.jpgI graduated from UM in 1958 with a major in music and a minor in library science and spent 36 years as a library/media specialist.  Many lifelong friends were made during my 5 years on campus.  It wasn’t until many years later that I realized what a profound impression UM made on me and my career.

I had more time than money so I decided I’d do some volunteer work for the University.  My first activity was playing in the UM Alumni Band for about 10 years.  Toward the end of that time, a fellow Alumni Band member got me involved with the UM Alumni Association’s House of Delegates.

During my involvement with the House of Delegates, my wife and I started coming early to homecoming to volunteer in the Alumni Office.  They have continuously found last minute things with which we could help them.  We have developed a much stronger tie to the University not to mention a wider circle of alumni friends.

You, too, can find a way to give of your time to help The University of Montana fulfill its mission.  Volunteering is good for the mind and soul.

Welcome Feast

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Welcome Feast Image

As a reception back to campus, lunch and music were provided for students following the first week of classes. The Oval was packed with students eager to enjoy a hot dog lunch as well as the beautiful weather. Local musician David Boone entertained the masses with his guitar playing prowess and striking vocals. After a long week of classes and the reality that summer has past, Welcome Feast was a great way for students to unwind on a Friday afternoon.

The UM Alumni Association is proud to be one of the sponsors of this annual event.

Cal Poly Tailgate

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Griz HelmetOver 400 alumni and friends gathered in San Luis Obispo for the Griz/Mustang game last Saturday.  UM supporters shared the tailgate space with Cal Poly fans where everybody was treated to the best tri-tip BBQ EVER!  Camaraderie, laughter and Griz spirit was pretty much the theme for the afternoon AND, most importantly, the Griz won!

Thanks to all in attendance for your continued support of the Grizzlies and The University of Montana.
